Discover Transylvania's Timeless Charm: Viscri & Sighișoara
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, the village of Viscri and the medieval town of Sighișoara offer a journey back in time, each a UNESCO World Heritage site and a testament to the region's rich Saxon heritage. A visit to these two destinations provides a captivating glimpse into a way of life that has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Viscri: The Authentic Saxon Village
Viscri is renowned as one of Transylvania's most authentic and well-preserved traditional villages. Life here unfolds at a relaxed pace, with horse-drawn carts a common sight and locals practicing traditional crafts like blacksmithing and felt-making. The village is famous for its imposing, 12th-century fortified church, perched on a hill above the colourful Saxon houses.
Visitors can tour the fortified church, which houses a small museum showcasing centuries-old objects, and wander through the village's wide, dusty streets. The village gained international recognition in part due to King Charles III (then Prince of Wales), who was so enchanted by the area's beauty and traditional lifestyle that he purchased and restored a house here. This commitment to preserving the local character ensures an experience that is both unique and immersive.
Sighișoara: Europe's Only Inhabited Medieval Citadel
Just a short distance away, Sighișoara stands as Europe's only continuously inhabited medieval citadel. Founded in the 12th century, the historic centre is a vibrant tapestry of colorful, centuries-old merchant houses and cobbled streets, encircled by intact defensive walls and nine original guild towers.
The town's crown jewel is the 14th-century Clock Tower, which offers panoramic views of the citadel and houses the history museum. History enthusiasts will also appreciate the house believed to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler (the historical inspiration for the Dracula legend), which now operates as a museum and restaurant. The Church on the Hill, reached by a historic covered wooden staircase of 175 steps, is another must-see, featuring impressive Gothic architecture and fragments of ancient frescoes.
An Unforgettable Journey
Together, Viscri and Sighișoara perfectly encapsulate the allure of rural Transylvania. From the quiet, traditional charm of Viscri to the vibrant, fortified walls of Sighișoara, these destinations offer a captivating journey through history
