Brașov: Where Medieval Charm Meets Mountain Adventure
Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, Brașov is a city that effortlessly blends centuries of rich history with the vibrant energy of a modern, outdoor-oriented hub. Known by its German name Kronstadt ("Crown City") and Latin name Corona, the city's multicultural heritage, shaped by Romanian, German Saxon, and Hungarian communities, is evident in its stunning architecture and lively atmosphere. This captivating city is a must-visit destination, offering an unforgettable experience for every traveler.
A Walk Through History
The heart of Brașov is its beautifully preserved medieval Old Town, a compact and walkable area brimming with landmarks. The focal point is the picturesque Council Square (Piața Sfatului), once a bustling medieval marketplace and site of public events, now a lively gathering spot lined with colorful baroque buildings, cafes, and restaurants. The former Council House in the center of the square now hosts the Brașov History Museum.
Dominating the skyline is the Black Church (Biserica Neagră), the largest Gothic church in Romania. Its name originates from the great fire of 1689, which blackened its walls with soot. Visitors can explore its impressive interior, which houses a remarkable collection of Oriental carpets, the largest outside of Turkey. Just steps away, you can squeeze through Rope Street (Strada Sforii), one of the narrowest streets in Europe, originally built as a passage for firefighters.
Beyond the main square, the historic fortifications, including the White and Black Towers and the remaining Catherine's Gate, offer a glimpse into the city's defensive past and provide panoramic views of the red-roofed old town. A visit to the First Romanian School Museum and the adjacent St. Nicholas Church in the Șchei district, where Romanians were historically required to live outside the city walls, reveals a different layer of the city's complex history.
Nature's Playground
Brașov's stunning natural setting is one of its biggest draws. The city is literally at the foot of Mount Tâmpa, which features a Hollywood-style "BRAȘOV" sign at its peak. A short cable car ride or a vigorous hike provides breathtaking views of the city and surrounding mountains. For winter sports enthusiasts, the nearby resort of Poiana Brașov is the most popular ski destination in Romania.
