Romania is home to two of Europe's most captivating castles: Bran Castle, famously known as "Dracula's Castle," and the magnificent Peleș Castle, a masterpiece of Neo-Renaissance architecture. While often visited together, they represent two very different facets of Romanian history—one steeped in medieval mystery and folklore, the other a modern marvel of royal opulence.
Bran Castle: The Realm of Legend
Perched dramatically on a rocky cliff in Transylvania, Bran Castle is a 14th-century medieval fortress with a forbidding Gothic appearance that inspired Bram Stoker's iconic novel, Dracula. The castle's narrow, winding staircases, thick stone walls, and imposing towers perfectly match Stoker's description of Count Dracula's eerie residence, making it one of Romania's most popular tourist attractions.
Peleș Castle: A Royal Masterpiece
In contrast to Bran's medieval austerity, Peleș Castle in Sinaia is a stunning display of 19th-century luxury and architectural innovation. Commissioned by King Carol I as his summer residence, construction of this Neo-Renaissance palace began in 1873 and concluded in 1914.
Peleș is an architectural gem, blending German and Italian Renaissance styles with Gothic Revival elements. It boasts over 160 opulent rooms filled with intricate woodwork, Murano glass chandeliers, and an impressive collection of European and Oriental arms and armor.
The castle's beautiful setting in the Carpathian Mountains, complete with extensive gardens and stunning views, offers a glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the Romanian monarchy.
