Sitting gracefully along the Mureș River in western Romania, Arad is one of those cities that surprises you the moment you arrive. It may not be the loudest or the most talked-about destination in the country, but that’s exactly what makes it so special. Arad is serene, stylish, full of history, and shaped by a strong Central European influence that you can feel in its architecture, boulevards, and relaxed lifestyle.
What draws travelers first is Arad’s beautifully preserved Secession and Neo-Classical architecture. Walking through the city center feels like stepping into an open-air museum. Grand façades, pastel-colored buildings, and elegant balconies make the old town perfect for slow strolls and photography. The famous City Hall Palace, with its tall clock tower and Vienna-inspired design, quickly becomes a favorite among visitors.
Just a few steps away, the Ioan Slavici Classical Theatre impresses with its white columns and artistic heritage. This theatre isn’t just a building to admire — it’s part of the city’s cultural soul, hosting plays, musical events, and performances throughout the year. Arad is one of the quieter cultural hubs of Romania, but it has a genuine passion for the arts that locals are proud of.
Nature also has a strong presence here. The Mureș River flows gently through the city, creating peaceful riverbanks where people walk, cycle, or simply sit and enjoy the scenery. On sunny days, you’ll see families, couples, and joggers enjoying the calm, making Arad feel warm and welcoming. If you need a deeper escape into nature, the Ceala Forest and Neptun Lake area is a quick getaway where you’ll find picnic spots, trails, and tranquil corners under tall trees.
Arad also has a rich religious and multicultural history. The Red Church, known for its striking Gothic Revival architecture and red brick exterior, stands out proudly against the skyline. Meanwhile, the Fortress of Arad, although closed to the public due to military use, remains one of the most historically significant sites in the region. Its star-shaped design represents centuries of transformation, conflict, and resilience.
Food and local life are equally enjoyable here. Traditional Romanian dishes, Hungarian influences, and modern cafés meet in a delicious mix. Whether you’re trying sarmale, goulash, or just relaxing with coffee on a terrace, Arad feels unhurried — like a city that invites you to slow down and savor each moment.

On your way towards Arad, you will admire the Roman Catholic Church and the Square in Vinga village.
