Sucevita - Unesco Monastery

Suceava, Romania

We invite you to UNESCO Heritage in Bucowina, the gateaway to spirituality, orthodox religion and beautiul nature!

This spectacular monastery of Sucevita was erected between 1584-1586 by the princely family Movilă and has the biggest number of wall paintings from all painted monasteries.

It was painted both inside and outside between 1596-1601 by Ioan and his brother Sofronie and it was the last monastery decorated with exterior frescoes.

Sucevita was a princely residence as well as a fortified monastery. Today, the thick walls shelter a museum presenting an outstanding collection of historical and art objects. The tomb covers of Ieremia and Simion Movila – rich portraits embroidered in silver thread –, together with ecclesiastical silverware, books and illuminated manuscripts, offer eloquent testimony to Sucevita's importance first as a manuscript workshop, then as a printing center.
