Built from 1827-28 after Catherine's Gate became too small for increasingly tall traders' carts, the fact that Schei Gate still copes with modern traffic is a testament to the foresight and skill of its designers and builders. The gate is built in a classical style with two smaller openings for pedestrians on either side of the main entrance, giving the gate the appearance of a triumphal arch. This is not coincidental: note the Latin inscriptions on the wall above the small arches, dedicated to Habsburg Emperor of Francis I, who visited Brasov in 1817.
