Moldovita Monastery

Moldovita, Romania

The Moldoviţa Monastery is a place not to be missed for tourists wishing to visit the beautiful monasteries of Bucovina. The place of worship is located in the northern part of the county of Suceava and is visited every year by hundreds of thousands of Romanian and foreign tourists.

Tourists are curious to see this place full of history especially the special outdoor paintings preserved in good condition. In addition, the fairy-tale landscapes and the scenic views are yet another reason for tourists visiting the Monastery Moldoviţa.

The monastery was built near the border with Ukraine, in the village Vatra Moldoviţei, and lasted for hundreds of years on the Moldavian lands. The Moldoviţa Monastery is listed among the most beautiful places of worship in the Bukovina, but also on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Moldoviţa monastery - one of the most beautiful monasteries of Moldova

The Moldoviţa Monastery, along with four other monasteries of Moldova, is considered a unique architectural jewel in Europe. The Moldoviţa Monastery was built in 1532 by Petru Rareş, son of Stephen the Great, and only five years later has been painted.

The place of worship was erected near the place where it was a stone church, which collapsed due to a landslide. Because it is surrounded by walls, the monastery looks like a fortress. The Moldoviţa Monastery impresses tourists especially for the charming style of paintings, where the predominant color is the red-brown.

On the outside walls of the monastery, visitors can admire historical scenes, religious or cultural. Remains a mystery how the Moldavian painters managed to achieve these special frescoes, while the colors that have become famous all over the world, are well preserved for more than 500 years.

In the monastery, there is also a museum containing various pieces of furniture, like a royal throne of Petru Rareş, an embroidered epitaph, a stamp of the monastery, embroidery or icons.
