Day 1: Arrival in Sibiu
Arrival in Sibiu and meeting our English Speaking Guide at the Airport Sibiu (SBZ). From here you will be transferred to Rasinari. Accommodation for 5 nights in a family guest house 3*. Welcome Dinner.
Day 2: Rasinari – Fantanele – Sibiel (4 - 5 hours hiking)
After exploring Rasinari, a curious village of shepherds (here we will visit the Orthodox Episcopal Church, which exterior is covered in paintings) we will go to Sibiel. Afterward, we hike on the Fantanele mountain. After a break in a rustic cabin in the mountains, we head back to Sibiel, where we visit the Icon Museum and where a hearty dinner with Romanian specialties awaits us. Of course, we cannot spare a glass of tuica (Romanian housemade brandy).
Day 3: Rasinari – Magura Peak – Cisnadioara (5 - 6 hours hiking)
We will hike all day long: from the village Rasinari, which got its name from the resin collectors (resin = rasina) we head to the “Rose Garden”, at about 1100 meters above the sea level and to the Magura Peak at the height of 1300 meters. From here we have a great view of Transylvania. On our way to Michelsberg (Cisnadioara,) we´ll reach the “Half-Stone” with fossils from the Limestone Age. Next, we visit the Roman basilica in Cisnadioara, a typical Transilvanian Saxon village. Dinner at a peasant family in Rasinari. We return afterward to Rasinari with a horse wagon.
Day 4: Paltinis – Rasinari (5 - 6 hours hiking)
Early in the morning, we go by bus to Paltinis, the starting point for an approximately 6-hour hike in the Cindrel Mountains. Our route leads us from Paltinis, trough Oncesti, and Tomnaticu to Rasinari. On the way, we stop for a picnic at the Wolf Garden. Dinner in Rasinari.
Day 5: Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture 2007
We will drive to Sibiu. You will have a guided tour on foot in the old city, where you will get to know the sights of the European Cultural Capital 2007. In the afternoon you have free time. You can take a walk through the city, you can visit the Village Museum, you can also go to take a bath in the salt lakes of Ocna Sibiului(Salzburg). Dinner and overnight in Rasinari.
Day 6: Rasinari – Balea Lac – Sighisoara – Biertan (3 hours hiking + 180 km driving)
Today we leave the region of Sibiu and go to the Fagaras Mountains. Trip to Balea Glacial Lake (2.033 m). We can expect wonderful views on our approximately 2-3 hour hike. After a picnic break at the Balea Waterfall, we continue our trip to Sighisoara passing through Apold, where we visit the fortified church. In Sighisoara, the most beautiful and well preserved inhabited citadel in Europe, we will see the 64 m high Clock Tower, the landmark of the city, and the Museum of History (inside), among others. We will see Vlad Dracula birthplace and climb the Covered Staircase until we reach the Church on the Hill. Dinner and accommodation for 2 nights at the Pension in the fortified church of Biertan.
Day 7: Biertan & the Transylvanian Saxons (4 - 5 hours hiking)
In the morning we explore the impressive Fortified Church of Biertan with its three defensive walls (UNESCO world cultural heritage). Then we`ll take a walk around the hills that form a unique landscape between the villages of the Transylvanian Saxons. On the way, we have a picnic and we´ll visit some other fortified churches. Dinner in Biertan.
Day 8: Biertan – Medias – Sibiu (80 km driving)
We will drive through Medias back to the Airport Sibiu.
