This program was designed to reveal one of the most spectacular caves in Romania and a medieval fortress, combining the geography with the history of Romania.

Romania Caves Overview:

With more than 12,000 underground caverns, Romania is a paradise for speleologists and adventurers. From ancient ice formations and prehistoric cave art to unique, chemosynthetic ecosystems, these caves offer a glimpse into the country's fascinating history and geology.

The unique and mysterious Movile Cave

Discovered in 1986, this subterranean wonder near the Black Sea has been sealed off from the outside world for over 5.5 million years. Its isolated, hostile environment of low oxygen, high carbon dioxide, and toxic sulfur and methane gases is home to a unique ecosystem that thrives without sunlight. Instead, the cave's 51 invertebrate species, 35 of which are endemic, survive through chemosynthesis.

Program

The first visit will be to the cave called “The Valley City”, accidentally discovered after a hydraulic explosion in 1949. You will visit the spectacular interior of a 20-million-year-old cave with stalactites and stalagmites, sometimes united in columns. The “Valley City” cave was declared a protected natural area of national interest.

The second visit will be to the “Dambovicioara” cave, formed during the Jurassic period on limestone rock due to the Dambovicioara creek. Inside, there can be seen interesting limestone formations such as stalactites and stalagmites.

In the evening, drive back to Bucharest.
